Zimbabwe Republic Police senior officers have been challenged to heighten their efforts in curbing revenue leakages by fighting acts of smuggling and illicit deals, as these have a negative effect on the economy.

Commissioner-General Dr Augustine Chihuri said reports by the senior officers should show what they are doing in their respective areas of responsibility to maintain peace and stability.

“Each and every one of you should play ball. There is no room for spectators who wait to cheer or boo those who have succeeded or failed.

“If all of you commit to the objective of combating crime and promoting peace, you would be able to cultivate and foster higher confidence levels and cooperation with your communities,” he said.

He said the struggle to fight crime and to find the right responses to the increasing transnational organised crime could not be fought reclusively or by loners.

Comm-Gen Chihuri said: “Therefore, be wary of those who nicodemously seek to divide us, the crybabies, ever ready to dissuade others from performing by continuously raising excuses over shortages of resources.

“True, resources are important for effective and efficient service. But, resources on their own without unity of purpose are meaningless.”

He said both Government and the force will continue to do everything in their capacity to adequately resource and empower police officers.

Comm-Gen Chihuri said they were aware of the tremendous efforts that some of the officers were making in curbing crime and creating livable environments in their jurisdictions.

“We laud that and you have our full support and wish you every success. In your daily plans, think about the violent crimes against women, children and the girl child in particular. Involve other arms of Government and concerned stakeholders in ensuring the safety of our people.

“On the other hand, it is almost becoming commonplace to hear or read reports of gruesome murders at the hands of relatives. Please, these people are our mothers and daughters. Do everything in your power to protect them. We must lead in all national action-oriented efforts to attack and solve the malady of crime that threatens vulnerable members of our society,” he said.

Comm-Gen Chihuri said the force was geared to reducing all forms of crimes by 3 percent by the December this year.

He urged officers to expend their energies towards the realisation of the goals set out in their Integrated Results Based Management Agreement.
